How We Calculate Money Making Rates

Complete transparency on our calculation methods, data sources, and why our estimates differ from tick-perfect theoretical maximums.

Our Calculation Philosophy

Money Making OSRS aims to provide realistic profit estimates that reflect how actual players experience money making methodsβ€”not theoretical maximums that assume perfect tick manipulation, zero mistakes, and best-in-slot gear.

Every method includes adjustable efficiency sliders so you can customize calculations based on your own gear, skill level, and playstyle.

1. Grand Exchange Price Data

We integrate with the OSRS Wiki Real-Time Prices API, which aggregates actual player trades from the Grand Exchange.

  • Prices update every 5 minutes on the API
  • Our calculators cache prices client-side for 5 minutes to reduce API load
  • We use the "high" (instant-buy) and "low" (instant-sell) prices for realistic margins
  • Static default prices are included as fallbacks if the API is unavailable

Note: Grand Exchange prices fluctuate constantly based on game updates, player demand, and market manipulation. Always verify current prices in-game before committing capital.

2. GP/Hour Calculation Formula

Our profit calculations follow this structure:

Gross Revenue = (Output Items Γ— Quantity Γ— Sell Price)
GE Tax = Gross Revenue Γ— 1% (capped at 5M GP per item)
Supply Cost = (Input Items Γ— Quantity Γ— Buy Price)
Net Profit/Hour = (Gross Revenue - GE Tax) - Supply Cost

Additional costs like gear degradation, potion doses, and teleport charges are factored into supply costs where applicable.

3. Actions Per Hour (Realistic vs Maximum)

Many guides claim unrealistic hourly rates. Here's how we set defaults:

Method TypeOur DefaultTheoretical Max
Vorkath kills/hr2836 (tick-perfect)
Zulrah kills/hr2432 (plugin-assisted)
Corrupted Gauntlet/hr68 (T1 armor speedruns)
Blast Furnace bars/hr13501500 (no mistakes)

Our defaults assume competent gameplay with occasional banking delays, inventory misclicks, and realistic attention spans. Use the efficiency sliders on each method page to adjust for your skill level.

4. XP Per Hour Estimates

XP rates are calculated based on the default actions-per-hour and standard XP drops for each activity. For combat methods, we account for:

  • Combat style used (Melee, Ranged, Magic)
  • Hitpoints XP from damage dealt
  • Prayer XP if using prayer flicking or bone collection

For skilling methods, XP rates match the OSRS Wiki's documented values at the given action speeds.

5. Why Your Results May Differ

Several factors cause real player results to vary from calculated estimates:

Gear Differences

Our default gear setups assume mid-tier equipment. BiS gear increases kills/hour; budget gear reduces it.

RNG (Rare Drops)

Boss methods with rare drops (e.g., Corrupted Gauntlet's Enhanced Weapon Seed) average the drop value over many hours. Short sessions will see massive variance.

Market Timing

Instant-buying and instant-selling reduces profit margins. Patient GE offers improve rates but add time overhead.

Player Skill

Learning curves, prayer flicking, gear switches, and movement optimization significantly impact hourly rates.

6. How Often We Update Data

  • Grand Exchange Prices: Live via API (5-minute cache)
  • Method Data: Reviewed monthly and after major game updates
  • XP Rates: Updated when Jagex changes game mechanics
  • Requirements: Updated immediately when quest/skill requirements change

All profit estimates are approximations based on average drop rates, current market prices, and realistic gameplay assumptions. Your actual results will vary based on RNG, gear, skill, and market conditions.
